Mod home library must-have title list. Collaborative.

Postby BAZ_MCM » Sun Oct 11, 2009 5:42 am

A friend suggested we collaborate on a list of modern design titles every MCM home library needs.

Theses will be titles to inspire the mod lifestyle. Essential. Fun. Whimsical. Your call.

It'll go a little something like this...

I post my list. You cut and paste my list into your reply and add to it. Next person copies your list and adds on. This continues until we've formed the definitive mod home library list. Two starts to whomever is first to stock their shelves with the complete list.

I'll start us off:

(In no particular order):

1. Atomic Ranch - book

2. Collection of Atomic Ranch magazine

3. Eichler - Modernism Rebuilds the American Dream

4. Julius Shulman - Modernism Rediscovered

5. How to Build Modern Furniture - Mario Dal Fabbro

6. How to Make Built-in Furniture - Mario Dal Fabbro

7. Mid Century Modern - Furniture of the 1950s - Cara Greenberg

8. Collection of Arts & Architecture Magazine

9. Googie Redux - Alan Hess

10. Sixties Design - Philippe Garner

11. Collection of Modernism magazine

12. 1,000 Chairs - Charlotte Fiell

Ok. Now cut-n-paste my starting 12 and go for it.

Cheers,

-Baz

Specifically to Baz

Before the list gets too long, have you considered breaking it into two lists?

One with an "Appreciating MCM Design" focus and the other with a "How to" focus? I can see those still working on their houses appreciating the latter as a specific list.

Within the same thread, folks could elect to add to either list.

Hi,
Here are the resources that I use most:

!) Design For Life-by Leslie Pina published by Schiffer******

2) 1952 The Herman Miller Collection-by Acanthus Press

3) Modern Furniture Classics; Postwar to the Post-Modernism-by Charlotte and Peter Fiell published by Thames and Hudson

4) Furniture 2000-by Leslie Pina published by Schiffer

5) Dunbar Fine Furniture of the Fifties-by Leslie Pina and Nadir Sufai published by Schiffer

6) Knoll Furniture-by Steven and Linda Rouland published by Schiffer

7) World Design..The Best in Classic and Contemporary Furniture, Fashion, Graphics and More-by Chronicle Books

8) The Design Encyclopedia-by Mel Byars published by MOMA

9) Fifties Furniture-by Leslie Pina published by Schiffer

10) Sixties Design-by Philippe Garner published by Taschen

11) New American Design...Products and Graphics for a Post-Industrial Age-by Hugh Aldersey-Williams

12) 300 Years of Industrial Design-by Adrian Heath, Ditte Heath, Aage Lund Jensen published by Watson Guptill

13) Antiques of the Future-by Lisa Roberts published by Stewert Tabori and Chang

There are many more books that I use...I also have some craft books from the era to identify art and craft items. If anyone is curious I could list them as well.

I put stars in back of the Design for Life because it is the best book I have ever seen on Scandanavian Modern....bar none....very very helpful.

Thanks,
Deb

While the Eames are already in the list, I would argue that this book that came out last year is now the ultimate Eames book, as it locates them in the broader framework of the development of MCM and includes as much about their peers.

The Story of Eames Furniture
Marilyn Neuhart and John Neuhart

My review is in this thread

From my way of thinking if you're going to have a Mid Century House, you should have source material as to how they were actually built, but more importantly how they worked on them. One of my favorite sources is, Popular Mechanics Do It Yourself Encyclopedia 1955. I have found that most of the modern books are trying too hard to emulate the case study hoses, which is like modeling everything on the 1959 Cadillac: yes it's beautiful, but there's so much more out there that's equally as nice.
