chimney caps. they are indeed necessary to prevent fires and prevent visitors. they're not all ugly... look at your local home centers for other versions. they're pretty easy to install.

should say rust color. :wink:

If you have a stone or brick chimney, you could build up 2-3 stones or bricks on each of the 4 corners and attach a stone or concrete slab on top of the 4 stones. Once in place, you can install one of the commercially available screens to the inside. You'll never see it in there.
