Yet another unfortunate MCM
paint job on Mercer Island- J-

Besides the garish colors, the
chimney paint being continued
up over the fascia board is the
probably the painter's choice-
(as were the colors?).

At least they didn't do what this unfortunate local P&K house's owners did:

i like the mustard chimney!

they just need to re-paint the fascia - that's all.

i bet a lot of people had questionable thoughts when we painted our house bright lime green!

Now the above one I really like!
The paint follows the strong lines
of the well-designed house. I love
the two pink flamingos at the
front door. J-

For me, fixing that fascia board would make all the difference.

Or better yet (ok, maybe not gray, but also certainly not red)...

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned context. Architecture doesn't live in a vacuum; homes are sited in amongst plants and other homes.

I don't like the pain scheme because I think it's a poor fit to its surroundings, the pacific northwest. Such surroundings require the main colors be more coincident with those in nature with the brighter colors being used as accents. For the same reason, I like Futura Girl's colors...on a house in Las Vegas.

Stephen, I agree with you as well-- context is everything. However, in that respect I'm more troubled by the color of the bark than I am with the splash of "mustard". I feel like the relatively mild variety of yellow they used is sufficently complimentary to the touches of bright green foliage peeking through the evergreens. The bright red bark is just too stark for me, though. I think with a dark mulchy colored bark, the whole thing would become more unified and agreeable overall.
You are born modern, you do not become so.
