the Seattle Times RE Section today

LL- Are these Builder Dingbats*
supplanting Mid-Century Modern?
If so, we've gone a long way back.
Jerry

* a builder term (not mine) that I've
heard bandied about in lumberyards.

What a RE Broker friend said about this LL Post-

Postby JGropp » Wed Feb 23, 2011 5:03 pm

"They wouldn't build them if people wouldn't buy them. In the end what we "like" is not as important
as what a buyer likes. Putting them close together makes them cheaper, and often cheaper is all the
buyer can afford no matter what they like and don't like. If you can only afford $300,000 and
anything that is NOT this is $500,000,
you learn to like what you can afford.

Most people like new vs old. Just is".

That's exactly what they've been building for years. It doesn't particularly offend me, because it only makes my modern house all that much more rare. If everyone had a house just like mine, I would probably want something different.

I agree: you learn to like what you can afford, and design is but one of many other factors that dictate where (and in what type of building) one chooses to live.

I've lived in, and enjoyed, many residences that were of architecturally poor quality. They offered adequate space, good lighting, proximity to amenities I considered desirable, and various other things that overrode the fact that there was nothing remarkable about the structure itself.

And of course, not all of us are modernists, and certainly not all of us appreciate architectural design (or truly understand the impact that our buildings have in the way we live). I kept a newspaper clipping of a Washington Post article I stumbled across last year while in D.C. that had some very poignant opinions and quotes about why modern architecture has remained a "fringe" style for so many years. I'll have to hunt it down and post it here when I have a chance.

I can see what you mean about
Ryan Homes- to many people,
this means "Home"- per se.
It is a pretty picture I'll admit. J-
