EICHLERS On Their Way To The National Register!!

Postby Adriene » Wed Apr 28, 2004 10:43 pm

In San Francisco today, the Historic Resources Commission voted UNANIMOUSLY to approve our two postwar modern Eichler subdivisions to the National Register of Historic Places! The tracts represent the very first postwar modern residential subdivisions in California to receive National Register distinction:

1. GREENMEADOW Subdivision (1954-55) - Palo Alto. 243 HOMES (excludes 1960s addition) and original Community Center.

2. GREEN GABLES Subdivision (1950) - Palo Alto. Original 62 HOMES that were built in 1950 (excludes 1954 addition).

The pioneering Eichler nominations have been in the works for three years and were researched and prepared by our dedicated volunteer group, HISTORIC QUEST. Now that the subdivisions have been approved by the Commission, they will be sent to the Keeper of the National Register at the National Parks Service in Washington, D.C. for review and final approval.

Thanks, Joe! Nominating these two great Eichler tracts was our first priority. Well yes...at least we won't have to worry about owner opposition on the X-100!

It's Official, an Historic Breakthrough -- Eichlers Make It to the National Register!

http://www.eichlernetwork.com/ENCookin.html

It's official, it's historic -- and it's time to celebrate! The Eichlers have finally reached that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Green Gables and Greenmeadow of Palo Alto, among the earliest and best preserved of neighborhoods developed by Joe Eichler, were officially added to the National Registry of Historic Places July 28. The appreciation runs deep. "It's an incredible honor for our neighborhood to be distinguished this way," said Jinny Henke, who has lived in Green Gables for 21 years.

The eight members of the Eichler 'Historic Quest' committee, who put in four years of volunteer effort to win designation, were particularly pleased. "This is a nice moment in time, when Joe Eichler will finally get his just reward," said Adriene Biondo, who lives in an Eichler neighborhood in Southern California. "Our purpose was to give the Eichlers the respect they deserve," said Marty Arbunich, co-chairman of the committee, "and, at the same time, reinforce homeowner pride and a desire to preserve these homes."

Winning National Register recognition for Green Gables and Greenmeadow will make it much easier for other Eichler neighborhoods to achieve landmark status as well, said Paul Lusignan, the National Register historian who granted the neighborhoods the coveted recognition. The committee "did a lot of groundwork that can be used by future applicants," he said. "Because these were the first Eichler homes to be listed, we wanted to be sure they really captured the Eichler story," he added.

Green Gables and Greenmeadow are among the first modern suburban tracts in the country -- and among the first modern suburban tracts of any sort -- to be added to the Register as historic districts, Lusignan said. The neighborhoods illustrate how California, with its booming economy, was transformed after the war, and how Eichler became "a leader in modern design" by employing architects to create innovative and aesthetically pleasing neighborhoods that influenced builders nationwide.

Only a handful of modern subdivisions throughout the country have preceded the Eichlers onto the National Register. They include Arapahoe Acres in Colorado, 124 individually designed homes built from 1949 to 1957; Rush Creek Village in Ohio, 49 homes designed from the 1940s to '70s by Frank Lloyd Wright disciple Theodore Van Fossen; and three subdivisions in Maryland from 1951 to '61 designed by Charles Goodman. An application is in the works for another Goodman neighborhood, Hollin Hills in Virginia. On the West Coast, only one modern neighborhood is on the Register, housing for nuclear plant workers in Richland, Washington.

Very cool congratulations to you all from Toronto, Canada.

I'm going to be in L.A. on Thursday August 18th and I'll be driving around to see (and take pictures of) my first ever Eichler neighbourhood, the Balboa Highlands, so I can write about it for my newspaper column in The Globe and Mail (see www.theglobeandmail.com).

See my post called "One Day in L.A." for further info.

I was wondering if any member of this board lives there and would like to come outside and chat with me so I can get a few quotes. Just your usual garden-variety stuff like "How long have you lived here," "What attracted you to the neighbourhood," "Did you know about Joe Eicher before you moved in," etc, etc.

If that's a possibility, let's talk thru private email--mine is:

dave.leblanc@cfrb.com or
dave.leblanc@globeandmail.ca

Thanks!

The Historic Quest Committee is very pleased to announce that we are being honored with a 2006 Governor's Historic Preservation Award for qualifying the First Suburban Eichler Housing Tracts, Greenmeadow and Green Gables of Palo Alto, California, to the National Register of Historic Places.

According to the Office of Historic Preservation, "this prestigious award is the only official preservation award presented by the State of California to worthy recipients in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of historic preservation."

Historic Quest members gathered in Sacramento yesterday to attend the 2006 Governor's Historic Preservation Awards ceremony which was held in the newly-rehabilitated Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park. Ruth Coleman, Director of California State Parks welcomed the recipients and Milford Wayne Donaldson, State Historic Preservation Officer made the presentations.

All of us are extremely happy to have played a role in the very first Eichers to be honored on a National level and hope the designations will inspire not only Eichler homeowners, but mid-century modern homeowners everywhere to recognize and preserve their own unique postwar modern homes!

Adriene, may I join the others in offering my congratulations for this double honor -- the National Register entry and the Governator's ... er ... Governor's Award. We are all proud of you and are grateful for your hard work which gets results! We all benefit from learning from you and we are lucky to have you as chairwoman of ModCom.

Everything is good in this. You have contributed so much to raising the profile of modernism in the preservation community and beyond.

Yours, Debra L.
