How to poly luan panels

Postby clarksdaleplace » Tue Nov 22, 2011 9:48 am

Quick question - I am thinking about putting up 1/4" luan panels on one wall in the den - a feature wall of sorts - I was wondering what products I should use to coat it - a simple flat poly? or something more exotic?
Thanks.

orange shellac will give you a amber glow...I used about 5 coats on mahogany paneling and it looked great. PM me a email address and I will send some pictures.

there are different grades of Luan...the stuff at the big box stores is usually pinkish, and is intended for underlayment. The sheets at a lumber store look very much like mahogany...it will have a more prominant grain pattern and only a few more dollars a sheet.

if you have luan, I would not go with amber shellac. search for luan or mahogany in this forum or go to eichlernetwork.com. They have a how-to.

I think redneckmodern refinished his mahogany too.

amber shellac work better when you're trying to match new birch paneling with old birch paneling.
