Ok, just a little carport brainstorming....

Future outlook, but to get a carport frame build such
as case study 21 below,
is it really all that expensive? Seems simple. I came
across some steel i-beams at a good price
i think..... 16"x6"x21' ($125/pc) as well some
shorter ones at ~10ft(60).
I'm guessing I'd need six of the 10footers for
vertical support and three of the 21footers for
the horizontals? Unless the three horizontal beams
could connect to my house, then I'd just need 3 of
the verticals. I don't know what's possible, so just
wanted to chat up a little bit. Essentially brainstorm,
so I know what I'd be getting into down the road.

home_boy: There's a similar shot of this house in the book "The Complete CSH Program 1954-1966"...

That book is so huge, I could only scan part of the image. I happen to have the chance to visit that house a few years ago...

It's amazing how close the neighboring houses are. Kind of cramped. Not like it appears in vintage photography.

Scott NC/USVI: Carports can add a lot of drama to a home's appearance, depending on how they're done. And add useful space, beyond just parking cars. There are companies that build carports (and sheds and patio covers, covered walks, etc...) and they'll provide all the materials. My architect has been in contact with a local company about a carport (and integrated covered walk) that will be part of a home addition project. We've had a lot of emails back and forth regarding the design. I've probably been driving him crazy, as I'm pretty particular about how I'd like it to integrate into the house...

Everything from making the roof appear "truly flat" to having deep (cantilevered) eves. He's had to point out what's possible and what's not. We were originally going with metal, but have started talking about doing it in wood, so my carpenter (an excellent problem solver) can handle the details. This, as apposed to attempting a highly custom metal carport via 3rd party.

If I were you, I'd contact a local carport install company and have a chat about what you'd like to do.

Good luck!

Robb, with your gently pitched roofs, I wonder if you'd want to have your new carport match that pitch ? It would be sort of a butterfly effect, with the portion that's closest to the house continuing at that slope, then reversing for the carport proper, so the tool shed end would be highest.

This would mean the main beams wouldn't be continuous "sticks" -- but your builder wasn't going to provide long enough beams to make them in one piece, was he ? As long as the connection is good, I'd think that would work. And the tool shed is providing good shear in all directions ?

Perhaps that's just not the look you are going for . . .

To add to SDR's post - here's a shot of my carport which gives my home a "butterfly and a half"

Hi SDR and John,

Thanks for the input you guys. John, I've always loved your place! I did mess around with a handful of different roof ideas, including butterfly. I must have been subconsciously thinking of John's house when I drew this...

My architect and I settled on a "flat" roof (the original idea), but with the minimum slope added via hip for rain run-off...

An excerpt from the construction plans...
http://0044f49.netsolhost.com/nashville ... vation.jpg

Not to hijack the thread, but an update regarding my addition project: Plans are totally done and my builder is chomping at the bit to begin (as am I). Financing plans are the hold up now, but they are looking good. Got an extension on my permit (in TN, theres a 6 month countdown to begin construction once issued, or it's voided). No longer under that deadline...thank goodness! It's gonna be awesome, I think. Now we just need to BUILD IT.

Thanks, Robb. I knew you would have looked at all of the possibilities. I like your ultimate solution. Bon voyage !
