Dave Brubeck's MCM House

Postby scowsa » Mon Dec 17, 2012 11:14 am

Just watched a BBC documentary from 2010 on the career of Dave Brubeck, who died a couple of weeks ago. The film includes footage from several prior interviews, some in his home, so I did some research. Apparently, an episode of the Ed Sullivan show featuring Brubeck was even conducted from the living room of this home.

In 1954 he had a house built in the hills of Oakland, CA -- which has many custom MCMs, although several were destroyed the in 1991 fires. The Brubeck house was designed by David Thorne the last living architect to have participated in Arts & Architecture's famous 1945 to 1966 Case Study Houses. He designed over 150 houses, most on steep hillsides and built out of steel.

If I wind up broke up, well, I'll always remember that I had a swingin' time

A few more images of the Brubeck house, DAVID THORNE 1954...

That place must have been amazing when first built. Kind of obscured by trees now. Hard to tell if the carport and lower deck space are still there.
