Bathroom Fixtures: any good sites?

Postby MikeLindsey » Wed Nov 02, 2005 9:38 am

We moved in to our new place and our bathrooms do not have any TP holders, towel racks, etc. Anyone know of some good websites to find something other than the Home Depot/Lowes inventory? Our house was built in the 50s and leans more ranch than MCM. Looking to add more modern to the mix.

Thank you.

depends on what sort of look you're trying to achieve. Do you want today's contemporary, or mid-century modern?

We ordered most of our faucets from Home Click, which is an internet retailer (http://www.homeclickonline.com/) with a reputation for honesty and decent service, although they can be rather slow so I hope you have some free time. They frequently offer additional discounts if you place your orders on-line over holiday weekends. They have a very wide variety to choose from, but neglect to inform you if something's out of stock and will take longer to arrive.

We also bought our sinks, bathtub, and several other items at a place called Pacific Sales (http://www.pacificsales.com/), which is not an internet retailer, but offers great pricing and has just about everything available to order. If you have one in your area, you should go check them out.

Another place that's not on-line but does have better selection than your standard big-box retailer is Standards of Excellence. (http://www.standardsofexcellence.com/) Their showrooms are nicer than Pacific Sales, and they may even have a wider selection, but they are more expensive. They are located throughout California, and also in Reno.

Finally, for the very highest end stuff, you can also go to your local distributors such as European Kitchen & Bath, or Boffi (which distributes Agape and has a very large showroom in Santa Monica). It's not cheap, though.

Here are a couple of photos of our bathrooms, to show how we've combined modern fixtures with a mid-century modern home:

Bathroom fixtures/cabinets

Postby Midlife Modern » Sat Nov 05, 2005 10:07 am

The fixtures and mirrors on this site are fabulous but pricey. They are worth drooling over! :P

Also, our old friend IKEA has a terrific square medicine cabinet with oval mirror that is inexpensive. When I get around to redoing my bathroom I will do a whole wall grid in those. It is in their catalog and store but not on their website. Also, their LAXAN wall cabinet for the bathroom looks very mcm to me.

The square mirror pieces in our guest bath are from IKEA. We liked them, because they go well with the glass tile in the rest of the bathroom, I think. And they're cheap and easy to install without drilling holes or anything. I also think they have a bit of an MCM feel, of course.

As far as plumbing fixtures are concerned, I'm not sure what would be considered mid-century modern. We've had this conversation before on another thread, as Joe knows. I maintain that plumbing fixtures originally installed in mid-century modern homes were not modern at all. They were the same plumbing fixtures installed in every home at that time. I notice in home tours that a lot of those restoring and renovating MCM homes today are opting as we did for modern European fixtures. Choice is a personal one in the end, of course.

Chimay: You didn't get those cabinets at Ikea, too, did you? They're nifty.

The period bathroom/kitchen problem comes up all the time in the context of remodeling and restoring houses of all eras. A bathroom is still pretty much a bathroom, but kitchens are used differently than they were 50 years ago.
