HGTV shows modern house but...

Postby HappyBunny » Thu Apr 10, 2003 7:54 pm

the person who bought it didn't preserve it. :(

This is on the show House Hunters. A modern home that looked to be in the Hollywood Hills and in completely original condition...I was drooling. It had the original appliances (aqua) and blonde paneling with a modern fireplace... the bathroom had pink tiles done in a striped pattern and an atrium--it was wonderful. Soaring angled ceilings and lots of glass--with a view of downtown LA.

But the woman who moved in added a wood countryish mantel on the firelplace (gag!), gutted the kitchen and redid it in oak wood (gag again) and modernised the bathroom. She also got rid of the cool little atrium. It made me so sad to see it. And none of her furniture was modern...ugh!

Why do the people that can afford these wonderful places try to make them into Irvine Tract Mansions?

Sad... that crap really makes me mad and makes me fear for what will eventually happen to our neighborhood.

HGTV Remuddle

This house was in a really cool neighborhood in South Central (I mean "South L.A.") It is in Baldwin Hills off of Crenshaw Blvd. There is this wonderful tract od Mid century modern houses on postcard size lots. The neighborhood is predominately African-American professionals, perhaps this may be why the area is over looked, what is really great is the view of Downtown and looking north at the Hollywood Hills, a view you dont usually get from Modern Hillside L.A. Houses. Many are in original shape, as you could see from the remarkably intact example on that episode.

just a post-script,I meant that perhaps the area is over looked because it is in south central, not because it is inhabited by predominately African-american professionals

I car toured the area that the house is in altho I couldn't find that specific house but they are scattered thru out the neighborhood bounded by La Cienega on the west, Coliseum St. on the north, Crenshaw on the east and the Parks, open spaces on the south/Slauson Ave. There seen to be some real finds AND it has underground utilities. Seems like the best collection are at the very end of Cloverdale in what I think was the remains of the Baldwin Hills dam. I even think some of the homes in that part of the neighborhood were used in the Acura and Nissan commercials.
Cool homes....

Just wanted to offer a positive side of your struggle Chimay. We have had and continue to have exactly the same problems on our restoration. "What do you mean you dont want MDF moulding" or "Have you considered tile for the roof" or "Where do you put all your stuff".

The good news is that after much struggle some people actually have come to us and said "Wow we really thought you guys were crazy when you pulled down the garage and built the carport, but now it is obvious that this is the way the house was ment to be." The best part is the person who made this comment was the original/previous owner who had spent 30k turning the carport into a garage.

Some people dont get it, others do, its sad but thats what kind of makes it cool.

Chimay -- What an odd and interesting tale. Have the Pod People returned? Is somebody fooling with the water supply?

Wright fought this battle 100 years ago! (He wrote that extra drawing was necessary just to show the builders "what to leave off"!)

This is a heart-breaking thread. . .

Thanks, Todd, SDR, for your moral support.

I'll keep you guys in mind the next time I have to explain to our builder, neighbors, or parents (for the 1000th time!) why we want to keep and restore our original wood slab garage door and are NOT interested in replacing it with a Home Depot-style white aluminum roll-top door complete with colonial-style panels, as most of our neighbors have done.

By the way, Todd, we're almost done with the house! Just a few more weeks and we'll be ready to start landscaping!
