do modern roof shingles exist?

Postby Jamal » Sat Apr 01, 2006 10:36 am

ok - here is the latest of several design issues on our house. the gutters are in. the landscaping is in. the french drains are going in next week. the house will be stained in the next few months. the house is going to be solid stained a shade of grey, taupe, pewter, whatever you call it. which means the existing roof shingles will no longer match and need to be replaced. this is the current condition of the house:

Image

note the brown shingles on the visible (non-flat) part of the roof. the house was originally built up tar and gravel. the roof has since been converted to a torch-on modified bitumen with poly iso insulation. i've inquired about going back to tar and gravel on the visible (non-flat) part of the roof only. even the original architect didn't think we should do this because the pebbles will be hard to contain on just the visible roof, make a mess with rain, and also tend to pucture the bitumen if walked on - which i do often up there.

which means we probably have to stick with shingles. so questions:

1) are there any remotely modernistic roof shingles out there?
2) am i missing an option?

i don't think we can use metal or tile on it since the roofline is parabolic - somewhat like a pagoda. the increasing radius is more evident from the inside:

anyway - what about something like a cedar shake shingle? some of the japanese temples i've seen have them....do you think it fits the style? they can be really country!

Cedar roofs can be a maintenance nightmare (at least in the Atlanta climate) - here they constantly need to be repaird and the roofs don't last as long 5-10 years. There are several golf-course communities here that require them as part of their covenants (implies high $$ or something).

Somebody else posted this a while back. The white or slate colors of this material kinda looks a bit like the old tar+gravel roof...

I didn't

think there were cedar shingle anymore, but then again I live in socal and that type of roof is growing increasingly scarce anyway-perhaps it's regional thing.
I'm sure you could use a tile of some type some japanese temples with the roof you describe have a cool looking blue (and sometimes golden) tile roof.

I like the look of good old asphalt shingles...I see no reason to change the type at all. Color yes, type no. I had a combination of flat built up and asphalt on my first modern and I thought it looked great.

maybe consider cedar shingles. Many fine Mid-Century Modern homes designed by modern masters used cedar shingles. Much better looking than asphalt.

Thanks, Jamal. Sounds like you have my dream job! That's one hell of a company car...

I'm actually a huge fan of road racing (I went to Le Mans last June for the 24 hrs) and of course recognized the Gulf Oil paint scheme right away. I assumed it was a GT40 or a kit car - rather than a new GT - because I hadn't ever seen any of the new GTs in the Gulf Oil colors. Of course, my favorite car in Gulf Oil colors has a German accent:

Anyway, great job on the new GT (too bad Ford didn't have the foresight to hang on to the GT40 name, eh?). Personally, I would have called it the GT44 instead  . Sad to hear that it's being taken out of production so soon, in any case. Good luck with the Shelby GT500!

let me know how that turns out, chimay. that sound like exactly what I want to do. I also want to mix the rock sizes a bit, like what I have seen on mid-'50s P&Ks in the valley.

is there a roofing term for this? the roofer is going to think I am a complete idiot, not that they don't already

I have a brochure around here somewhere. I'll post it as soon as I find it.

OK, guys. Here's the website of the material that I was talking about. It looks like it's the perfect solution. I'd love to hear from anyone who's used it:

Just to clarify, these modified bitumen products look more like the surface texture of a basic asphalt shingle than that of a tar and gravel roof. The granules shown on the dibiten site above are highly magnified. See tig's photos!
