I thought this dividing screen was cool -- inspired by the security screen at an L.A. store called Puppies and Babies. The circles should definitely be staggered as they are in the store window, though.
I might use this design for a metal backyard fence gate.

That's kind of what I had in mind, that or something incorporating some sort of Noguchi-esque scupltural elements.

Someone was selling an MCM light fixture on e-bay, but what caught my eye was the screen/divider in the background. May not be what your friend has in mind but it's another idea for the mix. I think it is soooo

I had seen this a long time ago, and thought it was kind of cool, especially if you like the circle railing. I don't know if other people make this.

Seen this in Mad Magazine once.
Used Flourescent tubes set in blocks in the floor and ceiling.
You could build a mini flower box or something.
