New Member / Creating MCM from scratch

Postby SleazyG » Thu Mar 05, 2009 2:39 pm

Hello,

I'm a new member who's just purchased a condo in Los Angeles and is interested in giving it a Mid-Century Modern renovation. Oddly, the property was built in 1965 but my particular unit seems to have been defiled sometime between 1975 and 1985, i.e. the dark walnut cabinets have been painted white, there's hideous, textured, white ceramic tile flooring everywhere and someone added a glass-block partition wall. I think the property was once "Boogie Nights" and later remodeled "Miami Vice," if that makes any sense. Right off the bat, I'm taking down two walls and having the tile removed and the underlying concrete subfloor polished. I'm hoping to use this forum as a sounding board to temper some of my crazier ideas and help me avoid doing something to the property I'll regret in five years. Everyone here seems to have a good sense of style about them, unlike other "retro" forums where the taste tend to veer towards kitsch. I'm looking for honest opinions.

Here are some pictures and the floor plans for what I call the "1970's Porno Condo."

Image
Foyer with awful ceramic tile, 1980's glass block and strange choice of paint.
Image
Wetbar area with odd drywall framing meant to look "art deco"?
Image
Kitchen with haphazard washer/dryer addition. Built-in wall ovens were removed, supply and waste lines were run on the surface of the drywall from the kitchen sink and the cabinets opposite this were sawed apart to make room for a slide-in range to substitute for the original ovens. Ugh.
