I'm new (just registered yesterday) and really enjoy this magical place.

Still, I've noticed some flaws:

(not to complain[I want to help make it better])

-there is many unanswered posts
-there is not too many members
-there is not too many posts

Possible things to do that help:
-posting/recruiting contest
-Web banners to post on other sites

BF. you see, many of us have jobs and cannot "chat" endlessly while waiting for the ice cream truck to show up. that said, conversations are spread out over days and weeks.

I invite you to show me another forum in the internet universe that gets as as much traffic and daily postings as Lotta Living when it comes to the topic of Mid Century Modern homes.

If you look at the Mid Century Modern Homes forum, since 2002 has received over 28,000 posts. Math says that over 10 posts per day for that forum alone. I have not seen any other MCM forums that can match that.

As for unanswered posts, if you actually look at them, you see many of them don't need to be answered. Most are announcements, real estate postings, event notices. very few meaningful posts needing comment go unnoticed.

Outside of the preservation, home, and real estate forums, yes, traffic is slow. that's OK. the primary focus here are the forums with the most traffic.

If you're not happy because someone didn't respond to your post, give it time. Nobody knows who you are. Plus, who wants to answer someone named Butt Face. You might consider changing your user name.

if you have specific ideas for marketing and recruiting new members to Lotta Livin, share them with Futura Girl. it's her site and she is in charge of that.

for real, dawg

Joe, you have my exact thoughts.

I might add that the archives should keep BF busy all summer.
Great stuff if you search around and follow links.

Personally, the last thing I would want is people posting solely so they could win something.

On the other hand, perhaps I should get my post count up on the off chance a future prize might hang in the balance.

One easy way to do that would be to include each sentence in a separate post.

A little dip, some chips, and a couple of brewskies. Why is it you're always talking about food, MRU?

The statistics available for a board like this are very misleading. The 5000 registered users that Perks mentioned is correct, but a very small percentage of them post. (And it looks like at least 2000 of those have already been purged from the database.) In fact, if you look at the post count for the top 10 posters on the board, they account for about 1/3 of all posts.

The view counts are also a misleading indicator. Years ago, I used to get thousands of views for my stories and games, and it encouraged me to keep doing them. But it turned out that 9 out of every 10 of those views were robots looking for a place to lay spam. Then a few years ago, FG but it an anti-spam modification, and the view counts going forward became more accurate.

The board also needs some work. It's very stable on the new server now, but there must have been a character code setting that is different and a lot of the old posts look like garbage. The search keyword database was bloated the last time I looked - about a year ago - and probably can't be fixed, even if converted to phpbb3.

FG has been taken hostage by Sears and Roebuck. Losing her as a top 10 poster is a great loss because she often stimulated conversation and made an effort to reply to posts that weren't getting any attention. (Those zero response posts are bad for business - not the ones that Nichols does for events - but the average Joe or Josephine looking for feedback or conversation.) And of course nothing new about the physical board is going to happen without her.

However, as the board turns, it's still a pretty good board.

Sky

Can you elaborate on the problems with the search tool? I have noticed recently (since the move to new servers) that the search feature seems to not pick up posts that I know are in the database.

I thought your brain was full, Perks.

Oh, I could be wrong about all that, but as MRU noted, the search tool is demonstrably broken.

really, we're a small niche topic. we're lucky to have the traffic we do. ever tried to discuss MCM on other design forums. not as fun.

the issue, I feel with declining traffic is the technology. the trend lately has been moving to blogs, twitter, Facebook, myspace and other social networking sites where there is less confrontation and less drama. ultimately, less information shared too.

Oh, Sky, But-Face is 14 years old, so watch the booz references

naughty Joe and naughty MRU

butt-face... do you really want to use that name???

if you want to see more action here - don't complain...
post more and go back over old threads and start to answer those unanswered questions!!!

rather than post about how things to be better - get into ACTION.
just do it!
