Any other Mid-Century Modern Forums?

Postby PaulKaplan » Mon Jun 15, 2009 8:51 pm

Was wondering if anyone has any links to other Mid-Century Design oriented forums? I recently discovered http://www.modernphoenix.net/ which is great, and wondered if anyone knew of any others?

Thanks!

this forum is new and has no traffic.

The Eichler Network has expanded their forums to include Alexander and Cliff May discussions, but there isn't any traffic. Their Eichler boards are usually just homeowners looking for answers on projects. not much discussion.

The MCM League is Portland specific and germane to Portland http://mcmleague.org/

realistically, I think LL is it for MCM discussions on a large scale. over the last few years people have moved to smaller regional forums, blogs, and other social networking technologies like Face Book, MySpace, and Flickr, rather than large monolithic forums. Discussions have become more decentralized.

Yes that is true but since it is only 2 days old wouldn't be better to support it then knock it down. I am sure that LL didn't start right off with loads of traffic and members.

Let's encourage those who embrace Mid Century

So I took a look and could not see what it hopes to do that LoL already doesn't do in relation to Mid Century.

actually, let's not.

if you want to start a forum to promote your business, fine, just don't promote your forum here. it doesn't quite work the way you mention. The traffic we get here really isn't that much. MCM is a fairly small niche and it's been proven over and over there not much traffic out there. The forums that have started and exist today are largely regionally based forums and aren't too open to members outside their areas.

Lotta Living, while many of it's members have come from SoCal, has developed a national following with members from nearly every state posting up over the past ten years. with 7 years of posts, members have a tremendous resource for research.

whatever success you have with your forum will come at our expense. People have busy lives and don't have time to surf from forum to forum, especially with blogs and other social networks taking up web surfing time. logging into yet another site to talk about the same things here isn't a reality. people will pick and chose.

Running a forum is incredibly difficult. Actually, it's a huge headache. you'll need a team of moderators to manage things and keep the peace as flame ups can happen daily. Over time, and with the iron fist rule of Futura Girl, we have what I feel, is a fairly drama-free, respectful culture at LL.

Not to discourage you, well maybe it is, very few forums survive. going days and weeks without postings really sucks. If you want to promote your business through forums, consider talking to Futura Girl about establishing a relationship with Lotta Living.

Instead of trying to carve out a forum, consider setting up a blog to support your business. that way you won't be dependent on contributors and you won't spend time either waiting for someone to post or managing unwanted posts. you can focus on content instead. from a business point of view, a blog is much better than trying to establish a new forum. that way you can work with the established forums instead of against them.

Pathetic.

Fear rules, doesn't it ?

Lotta Livers are engaged in flare-ups "daily" ? What country are you living in ? Lotta Livers are the nicest posters on the Web -- and not because they are forced to be !

Competition is The American Way -- except when my wallet is in play ?

This is my last post on Lotta Living. I wish you well.
