Paypal problem?

Postby SDR » Tue Apr 12, 2005 2:27 pm

I have no account with PayPal, and have never used the service. Nevertheless, today I received an apparently authentic e-mail from the "PayPal Account Review Department" informing me of a "recent unauthorized attempt to use my credit card" to make an unspecified purchase. I am invited to follow up by logging in. Neither my name nor any other personal information is included in the e-mail.

Has anybody else been in a similar position? Any advice or anecdotes would be welcome. As of now, I don't intend to follow up.

Please read this thread.

http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthre ... ght=paypal -- edit -- I forgot, you have to be a member to read the thread, so here are the salient comments.

I'd send them an email through their site and voice your concerns then wait for a response from someone un-automated.

Scam! Don't ever log in or access an account using links in email. Always type it in or use a *bookmarked link and verify the https URL in your address bar.

If you were a paypal account holder and had gone to a false link and typed in your name and password, they'd have all they need to steal your money.

Well, now they have my name, in addition to my e-mail address -- and I have not heard from them regarding my query about the spurious notice I received in the first place. If that has helped them in some way to gain access to private data, I'm screwed. Time will tell. . .

Thanks for the note.

For what it's worth, PayPal informed me promptly that it was in fact a "spoof" (their term) e-mail. No harm done, as no financial data was revealed or exchanged.

The logo was a "real" one -- PayPal Account Review Department my ___!

I've been having problems with Paypal, too, and I'm about to close my account with them.

Because someone allegedly tried to access my account, Paypal wanted to give me a new access code via snail-mail. However, it never arrived. I called their offices in Nebraska at my own expense to report this, and still nothing happened. Meanwhile, my memberships at websites expired.

I don't have a vendetta against Paypal, but based on my own experience, I won't use them again.

I've been getting two e-mails a day (spoofs, I imagine; the dot next to the logo isn't a recognizable copyright or trademark symbol) from PayPal -- which I have never even used! Very annoying. . .
