Fresno, CA - Eichler-like MCMs at great price

Postby Miguel » Sun Mar 19, 2006 11:10 am

Great Eichler-like homes in Fresno need a little TLC. Close to Fresno State University campus, in a nice quiet neighbourhood:

$347,950 (1,876 sqft, 4BD,1.75 BA)

$339,000 (2,256 sqft, 4BD/3BA)

$349,500 (1,727 sqft, 3BD/2BA w pool)

... and on a steeper note...

$699,950 (3,269 sqft, 5BD/3BA w pool)
...happens to be an Arthur Dyson designed home

The first 3 listings are part of the tract where my home is (. Unfortunately so far I wasn't able to find out who the builder/architect was.

After a couple of visits to the planning dept in Fresno, I took a look at all the available files and nothing came up on the original builder. I know this homes are special and can be cared for enough to look fantastic....just need more people to show interest in preserving the original architecture; they are all in very good condition and with minor fixes can look great.

The 4th listing was designed by Arthur Dyson (look in his site to see another amazing home he built in Fresno

The north part of Fresno is very rich in MCM architecture, both residential and commercial (I like to think of it as a little Palm Springs in the middle of the valley). That part of the city was built when Fresno was the model for a modern city and one of the desirable places to live in California. Despite the bad publicity, this part of the city is beautiful and very liveable. The are has seen a recent influx of people from the east coast, bay area and so-cal. Some of them are heading current efforts to revive the more derelict parts of the city:

Right now, there are numerous beautiful homes that have been virtually unspoiled and are in danger of McRenovation. This is my effort to prevent it. Please note that I don't have any financial interest in pushing these... I just want to find buyers that are willing to restore them properly. I'd like to keep the neighbourhoods with a nice collection of restored MCMs before they are altered beyond recognition.

Miguel~
keep posting these houses they are awesome. (though i don't have any plans to move to fresno)

i have been in some family friends houses when i was little that were incredible: 3000sqft+ 50's houses L-shaped, on huge lots, with stainless steel kitchens.

rnr, 3000 sqft homes built in the '50s are rare. usually expensive custom homes.

that's what i'm saying.

these were selling in the 400s and 500s in the early 90s, which was a lot of $$ for fresno at the time

the lots were probably 1/4 and 1/2 acre.

very much like la canada type neighborhoods (l.a. suburb)

I grew up in a 1962, 2000 sq ft home and it seemed huge compared to all the other homes on the block.

Will do, Joe.

I've been meaning to do a thorough survey of the MCM homes in the area, just didn't get a chance lately. As soon as I get a chance, I'll shoot you a pic or two and the exact location of the Cliff Mays.

MCM homes

Postby MarinModern » Tue Mar 28, 2006 4:14 pm

These are great finds. It looks like Fresno is full of MCM homes. They all seem diverse in design as well. You should hunt down elderly neighbors, they might have the info you are looking for as far as the builders/architects are concerned.
Check out http://www.MarinModern.com and http://www.eichlerforsale.com for great MCM homes in the San Francisco Bay Area!

You're absolutely right, Renee. That's the next step in my plan to find out who built/designed the tract I live in.

By the way, here's another great home for sale in a very desirable neighbourhood (a couple of blocks from Fig Garden Village, one of the nicest areas in Fresno):

I would be concerned about the million dollar plus house on North Van Ness Blvd. Only sporting one photo on 1.27 acres. Looks like a possible tear down candidate to the wrong people. When houses on that much land get that expensive, it's nothing for a developer to tear it down, split the lot into thirds, and build three McMansions and sell them for $800K each.

Hopefully, this home will attract the right buyer

The split level is by Don Murray. From Prudential listing:

"This Don Murray Mid-Century home sits on nearly an acre of landscaped grounds featuring a freshly re-plastered olympic sized pool, tennis court and motor court. Throughout the entry, great room, formal dining and kitchen (with Thermadour appliances), the newly refurbished stained concrete floors meet walls of glass and polished walnut. Master suite includes two seperate baths, steam showers, sitting room, dressing room and direct pool access. The downstairs media room has a walk in climate controlled wine cellar, and excellent game level view of the tennis court. A full wet bar opening to the living room, and second bar at the back tennis court entrance seal the deal that this was and is a stunning modern home built for the consumate entertainer."

That'd be me, if I had 1.5M to spend on a house.

I recently met Eldon Daetweiler, a transplant from LA that created the site:

.

He's an area realtor specializing in mid-century homes (the same homes I listed are in his site). He'll be able to show me the Beckett house this coming weekend; I'm really looking forward to that! The kitchen is in pristine condition, with all the original stainless Thermador appliances, etc.

I'll also ask him if he knows where the Cliff Mays are for you, Joe.

nothing in the so called "eichler" gives any indication it might be. Might qualify for "what not to do" to an MCM. horrid!

though, the "Sunnyside country club custom" has possibilities with the that photo. Eichler did build a handful of custom homes and and Fresno has been mentioned, but none have ever popped up.

Hehehe...I'm with you, Joe.

Except for one place (shown in a previous link), I haven't so far seen any homes that scream Eichler.

In the meantime... is everybody enjoying these gorgeously frilly interior decors :? ?

Yummy -- that house has a sympatico vibe [he said]. The tree(s) at the entrance are special. . . I want this one. Glazed front doors and/or sidelights would be a nice addition ?

[The kitchen photos particularly well illustrate the sculptural and functional glamor of under-cabinet lighting.]
