Since this seems to be the definitive thread on MCM lighting, I'll post my question here. When is mixing different types of MCM lighting too much? For example, is it too much to have a Nelson saucer lamp near a sputnik chandelier and two sputnik sconces?
I really want a Nelson saucer lamp over my dining room table, but the dining room is near the wetbar over which I was going to hang my chrome sputnik chandelier and next to the wetbar is a structural pillar I was going to install a sputnik sconce. I fear this looks like I'm trying to pack all the different lighting from the 1950's into one condo.
Honestly, I'd rather have the Nelson saucer in the dining room, a recessed light over the wetbar and double-cone sconces in the hallways. Unfortunately, the double-cone sconces protrude too far from the wall (the application is near a doorway and people will bump into them). The only low-profile/flush MCM sconces I've been able to find are the sputnik sconces. If I have no choice but to use sputnik sconces, should I keep the sputnik chandelier? Can I use the sputnik chandelier in addition to a Nelson saucer?
Here are the sputnik fixtures I'm writing about. I fear they're kitschy.
Here's a link I found for a $129 double-cone sconce. I have no idea what the quality is like, but the price is a far cry from the Daniel Donnelly fixtures.
