Got Patio Chair Vinyl Rope Suppliers?

Postby Futura Girl » Mon May 23, 2011 6:09 pm

I have a bunch of chairs and misc. patio furniture that needs re-strapping. I took lots of pictures, then stripped them and had them powder coated by a buddy of mine. Now I want to attempt to try and re-rope them myself.

These are not the wide vinyl straps - but the skinny 1/4" rope kinds of chairs.

Has anyone ever attempted this?
Were you successful? Any good tips?

And most importantly... where can one find rolls of roping?

Thanks in avdance.

Finding the material can be tough. I'm trying to remember the manufacturer of some cool stuff I found but the hard part was that they are used to selling to furniture factories overseas so you have to buy a container load. I assume you don't have that many chairs.

It's a long shot but call Cane and Basket in LA:

While I've woven many chairs in many patterns I've never done a lawn chair. Never been asked. It's a super simple weave that I bet you can figure out on your photos alone but I can help answer any questions once I see some photos. The tricky part is fastening them to the metal frame and I bet there was some hardware for this on the chairs originally.

thanks sidecar. i found dj patio. they carry brown and jordon white!!! nice...

... but you gotta buy the minimum roll of 1000 feet for $320.

i have 4 chairs (2 regular and 2 arm chairs) and 2 full sized lounges to do. i have no idea how much cord this will take? they are brown and jordon style knockoffs.

this is a pretty cool site where you can see different color combos on hoop chairs: http://www.plainair.com/hoop_chairs.html

I think i may ask the guys at all patio and see if they will divulge where they get their cord?

they restrung 4 hoop chairs for us a while back. they're really nice guys and did a great job. i'm just on more of a DIY budget this time around.

thanks for the offer to help. i was going to take my chairs back to vegas and string them there where i actually have a backyard and space to do them. wanna go to vegas for a weekend?

If all of your chairs are the hoop style (so cool) then you are going to have a lot of cord left over from a 1000 foot spool. But, if some of you chairs are the standard weave like on a Danish cord seat like this...

...you'll be surprised how fast you start using up cord.

Thanks for the invite but we have a 6 month old baby so, unfortunately, no Vegas weekends for me.

Have fun with the project and share some photos!

If you're having trouble parting ways, maybe the right location for browsing will help.

I know it's not initially what you'd think of, but at least it's got a dynamic range of patio and and the prices they offer are fantastic. Might be a better alternative than going the route of re-strapping and re-roping them yourself.

Of course, I can't help with the learning experience part! To get that, you'll have to keep updating us with progress pictures on the project.

How are they coming along?!

I have the a couple of chairs from the same manufacturer. You can find the vinyl covered rope at your local True Value Hardware store or someplace similar. It's just what was used as clothes line before dryers became ubiquitous. I wish they had more than white. I've seen vintage clothes line in a local antique mall in seafoam green...that would rock but it's vintage and I don't think it would last.
