Case Study House drive-bys....

Postby robbhouston » Sat Nov 24, 2007 7:55 pm

Hey all,

Well, I've been out here in West Hollywood for about 6 weeks on a working trip...

http://www.lottaliving.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=10731

...but have been without a car the whole time. So I haven't been able to explore like I've wanted to. However, my wife came out for Thanksgiving and I was able to talk her into doing a quick (very quick!) tour of some near by landmark MCM homes.

The closest of the three I wanted to try and see was Pierre Koenig's CS#22. Unfortunately, the private drive kept us from actually getting up to it to take any photos. I could see it, but only from the foot of a hill. STLModern has told me to call ahead, as Mrs. Stahl and her daughter live there and conduct tours. Will try that another day.

The next was Koenig's CS#21. As it turns out, the place was empty. There was some trash and a for-sale sign in a pile by the driveway, so maybe there was a recent purchase? The place was in pretty decent condition. However it does look somewhat crisper in photos than in person. But it didn't matter to me. I'd seen it books, mags, and on line for years...so it was very cool to be standing there right in front of it. I only snapped a few photos, as I felt like I was trespassing. It was also Thanksgiving day, and I was afraid most of the neighbors might be home and wonder what I was doing.

Speaking of neighbors, the house is kind of shoehorned between other houses. The whole neighborhood feels somewhat cramped. Vintage photos of the place show it nearly alone on a clear hillside. Pristine looking. There are now large mature trees all around, houses right on top of each other, and some pretty mature bushes lining the lot. Makes the vibe a bit less perfect than the idealized images that appear in vintage photos or staged contemporary photos.

The last drive by was Craig Ellwood's CS#16. Unfortunately, there was someone home so all I could do was snap a few pictures from the car. This is one of my favorite CSHs. It looks to be in excellent condition. All those walls obscure glass still perfectly standing. Awesome place...

I'd pretty much imagined about how large PK's #21 would have seemed, but Ellwood's #16 was a bit smaller than I thought I'd be. Even though I knew he height of those walls of glass facing the street, vintage photos of the place make it look quite a bit larger than it did in person. No matter, it was great seeing, even if only briefly.

Well, that was my first attempt at finding places like this. If I continue to work out here in CA, will try again with a bit more preparation.

Thanks, Robb ! There's nothing like fresh views of favorite buildings; they never fail to show something previously unknown -- or unappreciated.

I'm afraid the reality of present-day growth and encroachment will always came as a shock and disappointment. The old photos really do present a simpler place in time -- cliche' or not.

Isn't CSH #21 the one that sold at auction a year ago? Is the house empty due to a lengthy closing or is it already back on the market? It's sad to see the place empty, the pools dry and not a trace of human occupation. Hopefully this is not the end result of iconic modern houses becoming fetish objects for the wealthy...

Then csh21 has been empty for a loooong time I drove by a few months back and it was empty too with a for sale/sold sign in front, hope someone is maintaining the property.

Check on here for house tours ya might get lucky and csh 22 would be included. I got lucky once and got to see it on one of those. Mrs. Stahl was most gracious at accomodating (well behaved) hordes of folk wandering thru it.

Yes, CSH #21 is the one that was sold via auction at Wright. I'm surprised that it is still sitting empty. I read somewhere recently that the house was purchased by a woman from Korea, so maybe she is still organizing a trans-continental move.
