Due to a scheduling conflict, the start date for MCMFD V has been moved April 8. Note that some of the draft will now overlap with the observance of Passover, making it altogether fitting to ask "Why will this Fantasy Draft be different than all other Fantasy Drafts?"

I'm glad you asked.

In MCMFD V, we will be drafting only characters that appear in fiction. It can be a character in a book, a movie, or even in a painting, as long as the character is fictional.

As in past drafts, there will be 12 positions to fill per team. (An example of a position is "architect.") Unlike prior drafts, Lotta Livingites can participate in building of the position list. The first 12 such unduplicated positions posted here through March 31, 2012, no matter how absurd, will be in the draft. (But there can be only one position posted per Lotta Livingite.) If fewer than 12 positions are posted here, then the Draft Committee will decide on the remaining positions.

There are few other rules to the draft. Mainly, you cannot draft a character who has already been drafted, and you can draft only one character per day of the draft. (If you miss a day, you can draft make-up picks.) At the end of the draft, each participant will declare himself, or herself, the winner.

Only 44 more days until MCMFD V!

We still need 12 suggestions for positions. I'm only entitled to pick one (unless no one else helps get us to 12), so to show you how this works, I'll make my position pick:

Spy

Meaning that each participant should draft one fictional spy for their team.

... need 11 more ...

How about any Ayn Rand character, given she was very much an MCM author. The film version of The Fountainhead was released in 1949.

Her work is regularly revisited, particularly when libertarian views resurface in the media.

i love the ayn rand suggestion - i already know who i'd pick.

how about:
wrecking crew member
sculptor
male singer
female singer
choreographer
poet
I'm gonna keep on the run... I'm gonna have me some fun if it costs me my very last dime.
If I wind up broke up, well, I'll always remember that I had a swingin' time

Scowsa, the way I thought it would work is that you have a position to fill and then you can fill it with an Ayn Rand character if you wish. It might help to see the results of prior MCM Fantasy Drafts:
http://bigdogwebpages.com/bdhome/mcmfd/mcmfd.php
(Best illustrated by changing the year to 2008 and clicking the "sort by position" radio button. But note that this year will be the first time we are drafting fictional players.)

The draft idea parallels the Football (American, that is!) draft pattern. A football team needs a quarterback, so they might go out and draft Stanford's Andrew Luck, for example. In MCM Fantasy Draft V, if your team needed an architect, then it might draft Ayn Rand character Peter Keating. (He's probably not the first one to come to mind, but controversy is a fun part of the draft.)

That said, we can still make this suggestion work! The person drafting an Ayn Rand character just has to be clear which position they are filling, since in theory you could draft a team of 12 Ayn Rand characters.

I like all of those FG, but because there is always whelming demand to participate in the draft, I did state above that there can only be one position posted per Lotta Livingite. So, if you don't mind, I'm going to list "poet" for now, because I like that one best - but you can override me on that - and we'll set aside the others for the Draft Committee should we not have 9 other Lotta Livingites posting their suggestions by April 8.

    Position List

      Spy
      Ayn Rand Character
      Poet
(3 positions filled, 9 suggestions needed before April 8)

Banned!

In the interest of maintaining its integrity, if any, the Committee on the Draft* has banned Sean based under the "conduct unbecoming" clause in the Fantasy Draft charter.

In toto:
    Banned
      Sean (through March 31, 2013)
      Velveeta (through December 31, 2049)
    Secret Probation
      Cal Worthington
      Ice T
      lorrainelasvegas
      Rockland
    Double Secret Probabtion
      Joe
      Spot
Stephen Colbert (you know what you did!)

*The Committee on the Draft is not related to nor associated with the MCM Fantasy Draft Committee.

I don't want to be the one to "spread" rumors, FG. Let's just say that it isn't always the case that the cheese stands alone.

I have a suggestion: #@$* the MCM Fantasy Draft!

That was not directed at you, FG; I want you to know that I really appreciate your support over the years.

And it's not just that I'm bitter about being banned from the draft. I mean look at the list! It's a mockery and a travesty and a sham. Why is Ice T on probation? Didn't it occur to anyone that that is a bad rap?

Many thanks to all those who telepathically sent their suggestions for the position list. Here it is so that you can begin planning your draft picks in earnest.
    Position List
      Astronaut
      Ayn Rand Character
      Doctor
      Extraterrestrial
      Housewife
      Indian Chief
      Lawyer
      News Person
      Poet
      Politician
      Singer
      Spy
Remember, you should only draft fictional people to fill these positions this year. You can make your first pick on Sunday, April 8. And, as always, you can follow the draft live, here:

For its first pick, Team Sky selects as its fictional poet:
    Fred Flintstone

Flintstone wrote:I love thee Wilma, with hair like silk,
Lips like cherries, skin like milk,
Your shell-like ears, your dainty hands,
And eyes so black, like frying pans

And when you in my arms are in,
My love how can you doubt?
I quiver just like geletin,
And sometimes even break out.

You're a perfect peach, my love,
Together we're a pear (pair),
You're sweet, you're nice, you're paradise,
And all kinna stuff like that there

For its second pick, Team Sky selects as its fictional doctor, the definitive and infinite:
    Ben Casey

And now some administrative details. Note that anyone starting today can draft two picks - and then one a day until the 12th day. And, as always, follow the draft here:

For its third pick, Team Sky selects as its fictional extraterrestrial:
    Klaatu

I can't believe this guy was still available in the 3rd round!

For its fourth pick, Team Sky selects as its fictional housewife the beautiful, bewitching, alliterative:
    Samantha Stephens
!

Note that anyone starting today can draft four picks today - and then one a day until the 12th day - although I certainly understand if the formidability of Team Sky through the first four picks instills in you a sense that you're not up to the challenge of the MCM Fantasy Draft.

On the fifth day of fantasy, Team Sky picks for me:
    Sugar Kane Kowalczyk
... in the position of fictional singer.

Note that anyone starting today can draft five picks today - and then one a day until the 12th day.

For its sixth pick, Team Sky selects as its fictional (mild-mannered) news person::
    Clark Kent
Note that Kent can also be a pinch extraterrestrial making him that rare a double threat player - triple threat if I need a man of steel.

I've been thinking a lot about that.

There are still plenty of good ones available. My short list includes Derek Flint, Harry Palmer, and George Smiley.

Short indeed.

Short on brains. Short on ability. Short on sex appeal.

You're missing the obvious choice and proving once again that this draft is nothing but a sham.

Not a sham … perhaps a Sham Wow! This draft holds 12 times the weight of the NFL draft – "weight" meaning significance, that is.
