LONG BEACH PRESS TELEGRAM

Interest brewing in historic Koffee Pot building
By Greg Mellen, Staff writer
LONG BEACH — The old abandoned Koffee Pot restaurant could have a new tenant if Kerry Perham is able to meet the conditions placed on his remodeling plans by the Cultural Heritage Commission.

Kerry Perham appeared before the commission, which approves external changes to historic buildings in Long Beach, to pitch his idea to convert the former eatery into a barbershop.

If Perham's proposal is workable, he'd like to open at 957 E. Fourth St. as Butter's Coffee Pot Community Barber Shop, as soon as the refurbishment is completed.

Commissioners were delighted that someone was interested in moving into the city landmark building in the shape of a coffee pot, which some on the commission estimated had been vacant for 10 years and has been neglected.

Because Perham doesn't own the building, he was looking for an affordable way to upgrade the building without huge costs. He said the owner was not interested in investing heavily in the property.

The major hurdle he expects to face is conforming to a condition that he restore some badly damaged stained glass windows that were an important element in the building.

Although the commissioners were impressed by Perham's interest, several were surprised the owner did not appear.

"This is a unique, unique building in Long Beach," said commissioner William Wynne. "I'd like to see the owner here and have him commit and understand what he has."

Well, looks like the barber shop has opened.
