Stainless steel frames sounds pretty extravagent - i would think aluminum would be a better choice - saves on weight and more mcm than stainless

I bought a 1961 modern house last Fall 2005. Began formulating a master restoration/renovation plan from the moment I'd seen it (during the Summer 2005) and knew I was going to buy. After closing, I (and my small army of professionals) worked very hard for about 4 months prior to my moving in, then another 2 or 3 months of continuous work there after to complete the first big phase. I did a ton of up front research on everything from the style of the house to specifics like what kind of shower door I wanted, light fixtures and/or how was I going to build this or that. (thanks for all the great tips and leads from the LL forums!!!)

Have now been living in it and with the multitude of decisions I made along the way...still loving it all. It was a tough 6+months, but worth it as now I'm able to enjoy it. And since the major stuff is behind me, any new projects are closer to simple weekend things. Love that!

I say, as long as you do your homework and remain true to the house's original style, it's ok to renovate before moving in. Good luck with all your plans!

PS: I looked into Raydoor when I was planning a sliding wall/door in my living room. They have awesome looking stuff. I ultimately went with a simpler/cheaper solution. But, depending on your budget, they're worth checking out.

I too am looking for closed door systems (already closed escrow :P ). After calling Raydoor, the Sliding Door Company seems pretty reasonable. Not sure how quality differs, but Raydoor is $2,000 for a standard 89w X 83h 2-panel sliding door, plus $124.00 per panel for frosted glass. Ouch.

Have you considered fabricating your doors from polycarbonate sheets yourself. I am experimenting with some ideas along the lines for a client. Just a sheet of polygal with an aluminum angle top edge bolted to it. I will probably add an angle at the bottom edge just for looks and bottom weight. Just use standard sliding door hardware attached to the top angle.

Maybe you already have a track in place and can reuse the existing hardware.

You might need to fabricate an aluminum angle valance to hide the hardware depending on the opening head detail. Or just leave the hardware exposed.

It is not quite as classy as the frosted glass and aluminum doors, but it does not have to be tempered glass and it should be a lot cheaper. Other polycarbonates are available if you do not like the ribbed look of polygal. Polygal is beginning to look a little tired.

tig64105, I like MRU's idea of polycarbonate. The most recent issue of Sunset has a nice addition of a home skinned in polycarbonate. cheap too.

nice floor plan. rest of the house?

Just FYI...I researched glass alternatives for a 6'x10' skylight I had put in. The info I got from the plastcis companies I contacted was that polycarbponate IS very tough, and it won't break like glass if impacted (good for using as a safety barier that you can see thru), but that is scratches easily (even with a fingernail). For me, it also mattered that it will yellow over time when exposed to the sun. So I went with .5" acrylic, very tough & no yellowing, no bowing/warping/cracking due to UV. Of course, sunlight effects probably wouldn't matter indoors, unless there was a bunch of direct natural light.

Another thing (important), I also learned you shouldn't try and wipe or buff off acrylic (or poycarbonate, I'm guessing), as you'll get a perminant haze and/or scuffs. Learned that the day it was installed. I suppose if you went with textured/frosted or obscure poly, that might not matter. I guess my point is, if the location the material is installed is going to have a lot of human contact, glass might be a more durable choice, especially when it comes to cleaning.

If you are interested in DIY I could send you a print of the doors we have in our living room. They are angle iron frame with fabric. Originally it was shirred silk but now they just have streached material. Pretty simple design with rollers on the bottom edge and channels in the floor.

Closed with the lights on behind them they glow like a huge lamp.

Fabric has an added plus of being good acoustically.
This is especially important in a family room where music will
be listened to or surround sound TV will be watched.

Thanks Marty, work in progress. I do like to turn it up in the living room and the fabric does help, alot. That vintage pioneer you see on the shelf is no slouch:)
Joe, the black and white was taken in 57 by Norman Carver Jr. He was kind enough to give us original prints from his photo shoot of the house that he had filed away. Half of the 30 or so photographs we have are from him, the other half are copies from the Vitra Museum. The color shot is mine. The chair and sofas are original to the house. There are sliders in the master bedroom that had fabric on them as well...the original fabric had large tree forms printed on them. I like the sliding doors and would think that you could have some custom made or DIY'd for a reasonable amount. Like I said, I'd be happy to share the prints...
