Dominion Grocery Store, Toronto(Etobicoke) ON Canada

Postby myronx19 » Sun Sep 24, 2006 6:19 pm

Name: Dominion (Grocery Store)
Architect:
Year:
Street: 1500 Royal York Road
City: Toronto (Etobicoke)
State: Ontario
Zip:
Country: Canada
Phone:

Type: Retail Store - groceries
Style:
Status: safe for now

Description: This has been a Dominion store for as long as I can remember (34 years!). It's quite unusual, since Dominion only operates large format stores, and they've maintained this one for so long. The plaza was supposed to be demolished, however, the local folk didn't allow this to happen.. the landlord really wants to sell the land for housing development.. :(.. It's safe for now, but who knows?!?! I'll post a day shot up soon from several different angles.

What a fabulous picture! Thanks for sharing a bit of Canadian MCM!

For your interest, there's actually an old grocery store that has become a Food Basics in Toronto. It has a reverse sloping roof (sorry I can't think of the right term, right now), in which the two sides of the roof goes upwards.

This grocery store is located at Yonge Street, north of the Finch subway Station and south of Steeles Ave.

Do you know of it?

Myronx19, I know you were asking about commercial buildings. But, I wondered if you know about the apartment buildings designed by Uno Prii?

I believe all the following are by Prii.

11 Walmer Road
35 Walmer Road
44 Walmer Road
74 Spadina Road http://www.74spadina.com/default.aspx?TabID=8348
100 Spadina Road
20 Prince Arthur Ave
485 Huron St
190 and 195 Exbury Rd and 2335 and 2415 Jane St

All but the last one mentioned are located in the Annex area in Toronto. So, it's easy to reach by subway if you ever wanted to walk around and scope out these buildings in person.

Unfortunately, the buildings shown at the last link aren't in the best neighbourhoods. These apartment buildings are really smashing. I really like admiring them in the distance, when I'm stuck on the 401 eastbound in Etobicoke.

This Dominion is wonderful. I like this type of roof very much, you can picture yourself a row of finned cars in front of the grocery :D
